The American Book Review has a list of the 100 Best First Lines from Novels, and the title of this here blog comes in at number eight! Also note that "Catcher in the Rye" is listed higher than "David Copperfield", which reminded me of "London Calling" topping "Elvis Presley" on the Rolling Stone's List of 100 Greatest Album Covers.
I have read only three of the books on the ABR's list, which is a shame, I guess, but I have several unread books around that all made the list, so once I've finished the two I'm currently reading (Sartre's "Nausea" and Joey Goebel's "Torture the Artist") I know where to look for inspiration.
